Le Cafe des Irlandais

A couple of times recently I've dined at the newly opened Le Cafe des Irlandais on George's Street in Dublin (where Cafe Bar Deli used to be). They serve delicious French dishes at very reasonable prices, I'm a big fan of the rotisserie chicken and the creme brulee! They also have the best wallpaper ever! Look closely, you will spot Irish icons and architecture, old and new. Not only that but the upholstery on the seating features euro coins as buttons. Brilliant!

I'm very impressed by this place. I think it'll be part of a trend of returning to the aesthetic of the Edwardian Dublin of Joyce, Yeats, Sir John Lavery, whose actors & ideas seem bigger, more satisfying, less cheap than Celtic Tiger culture. The Winding Stair bookshop on the Quays is a similar spot. The atmospheric Belle Epoque cafe was also well used recently in the Louis Vuitton ads with Madonna.

Hi Thomas,
I've been in the Winding Stair bookshop, it's brilliant, have you also visited the Winding Stair restaurant which is upstairs over the bookshop? Old wooden floors, rough finishes, similar kind of style, and of course delicious food!! So good. Didn't see those Louis Vuitton ads, been doing some Googling but can't find them. I'll keep an eye out though! :)

Yeah, The Winding Stair restaurant is the kind of place that shows how great the irish aesthetic is when executed skillfully. It's a really soulful spot. I could imagine Yeats there, no doubt in a window seat communing with 'the white birds' on the river! He'd certainly recognise the food -real authentic Ballymaloe-type loveliness.
I am really happy to see the Grafton St. Bewleys returned to its former glory (or better)as the informal chattery heart & hearth of the city. As much as I admired the fancy fish restaurant on the 1st floor mezzanine, it just didn't feel right.
Here's a link to those Vuitton pics

Thanks for the link! I see what you mean, such a nice atmosphere! I was in the old Bewley's recently, it's looking quite snazzy these days!
